The TTC Fulda-Maberzell is setting its sights on a title chase for the upcoming season, bolstered by the addition of world-class player Jonathan Groth. Alongside securing the services of the Danish talent, the club has also announced the extension of contracts for star player Dimitrij Ovtcharov and other key team members.
Groth, currently ranked 17th in the world, will join forces with Ovtcharov, who holds the 20th spot, and Kao Cheng-Jui, further strengthening Fulda's already formidable lineup. The trio of top players, all currently ranked among the world’s top 25, sets the stage for a potent attack on the Bundesliga title.
"We've become an even stronger team," said TTC president Stefan Frauenholz. "The goal for next year is clear: reaching the playoffs, and ultimately, chasing the title."
Strategic Player Rotation and Playoff Aspirations
Fulda aims to maximize the talents of Groth, Ovtcharov, and Kao by ensuring that two out of three top players are available for every match. For crucial encounters, including those against dominant teams like record champions Düsseldorf, all three will aim to compete together.
This strategic setup should reduce the pressure on Ovtcharov to be the sole point supplier, ensuring a more balanced approach to matchups. Ovtcharov has also extended his contract by two more years, following his impressive performance in the current season, where he ranks second in the league for the best win-loss record. “I can imagine staying here long-term,” Ovtcharov shared after the announcement.
Key Extensions and Talents for the Future
Alongside Groth’s signing, Fulda has also extended the contracts of crowd favorite Ruwen Filus, rising star Fanbo Meng, and 20-year-old Kao. With these commitments, the club is determined to finally capture the Bundesliga title after more than two decades and three runner-up finishes.
Groth’s Return to Fulda
For Groth, this marks a return to a club where he previously played during the 2012/2013 season and from 2015 to 2018. Known for his aggressive playing style and powerful forehand, Groth adds a new dimension to Fulda’s attack. TTC coach Qing Yu Meng praised his ability to apply pressure on opponents and described his forehand as a formidable weapon.
Groth, who has gained extensive experience through his career in Russia and currently in Poland with the top team Dzialdowo, believes his game has evolved since his earlier years at Fulda. "I've become a better player, especially in terms of tactical awareness," Groth stated in an interview. As a left-hander, he offers Fulda more tactical flexibility and options for doubles matches.
Groth’s doubles prowess is also well-established. In 2016, he won the European Championships with Patrick Franziska, and he has regularly advanced to the later stages of major singles tournaments, including the Olympics (2016, 2021, 2024).
Are Fulda’s Title Ambitions Realistic?
Ovtcharov believes that with the new team setup, Fulda will be a match for the top Bundesliga teams next season. The club’s aim is now firmly set on achieving their long-awaited title victory, something they believe is entirely within reach with their new powerhouse lineup.
